Since late 2014, Light Phone has pursued an innovation process focused on creating a mobile device designed to compete in the market.
The prototype and early versions of the product were not faster than the best-selling smartphones. Nor did they take better photos or offer a more intuitive operating system.
The true innovation behind Light Phone lies in how it addresses the well-known problem of smartphone overload. It offers a completely “decaffeinated” electronic device: no web browser, no social media, no email, no advertising, and no app store.
And yet, through this innovation process—which some might have considered a crazy idea—the company has reached a $24 million valuation and validated its product-market fit, selling more than 20,000 units.
Today’s smartphones can take extremely high-quality photos, edit them, and share them instantly, while also offering all the other features available on a modern smartphone. The development of these capabilities in smartphones seemed to spell the end for the digital cameras we once knew—devices essentially designed to do just two things: take photos and record video.
This reality is also beginning to change with the resurgence of the compact digital camera category. Several studies point to renewed growth in sales within this segment.
It is true that this example does not directly illustrate an innovation process based on stripping features from an established product. However, it does highlight a broader market trend toward highly specific, purpose-built products for individual functions, moving away from the feature overload of increasingly integrated, all-in-one devices.
The trend toward decaffeinated electronic devices is having a particularly strong impact on the wearable device market. Apple, with its multiple generations of the Apple Watch, along with its competitors in the Android ecosystem, has shaped the market and established many of the standards for competing in the wearable technology space.
The mini-computers we wear on our wrists keep us constantly connected through instant communication, location services, health monitoring, and fitness tracking. They also serve as payment devices, while the screen remains a constant source of distraction.
This information overload has opened the door to “decaffeinated” wearable devices.
Some publications in the field of psychology, dating back to 1890, have given us a clear clue: people have a natural tendency to form groups they identify with and enjoy being recognized for what they genuinely like and value.
These two factors have created the perfect environment for the emergence of specialized or “decaffeinated” wearables.
Sports bands represent a growing category. We are no longer satisfied with a general-purpose smartwatch that simply tracks health and fitness metrics while we swim. We want a specialized wearable that can also help us improve our stroke technique, identify different swimming styles, and provide highly specific insights into our performance as swimmers.
Another clear example can be found in padel, with a wearable developed in our laboratories. This is not a conventional smartwatch.
