Out of curiosity, I typed the word \u201cprototypes\u201d into Google.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
A veritable hornet\u2019s nest!\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
I hoped to learn who my potential competitors are; companies that roll up their sleeves and manufacture inventions.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Let me tell you how they measure up:<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
60% Patent and trademark agents.\u00a0<\/div>
30% Factories, especially those specializing in plastics.\u00a0<\/div>
9% Marketing and design agencies.<\/div>
1% Engineering firms specializing in prototyping.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
What an outrage!<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
1. Patent and trademark agents do NOT manufacture prototypes. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Why advertise themselves as such?\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
The only thing I can think of is that they want to get to the inventor to convince him to patent his invention before demonstrating whether or not his idea works.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
I finally understand why we receive so many utility models with technical descriptions that are downright comical. \u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
2. Factories do NOT have your business in mind.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll agree with me that factories invest hundreds of thousands in their machinery.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll also agree that their priority is to keep the machines running\u2026\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
So, do you think they\u2019re going to manufacture your prototype thinking of its future cost?\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Absolutely not. The factory\u2019s priority is that your prototype be compatible with their machinery.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
3. With photos of a product that doesn\u2019t exist, you\u2019re not going to get anywhere. \ud83d\ude42<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Are you sitting down?<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
As if that weren\u2019t enough, I\u2019ve read that there are agencies that promise to help you sell the patent with a couple of photos.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>

I\u2019m not going to dwell on this now, out of respect for your time.\u00a0<\/p><\/div>

So that they don\u2019t mess with you, here are 5 useful tips for selecting a factory for your prototype:<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
i. Existence of capabilities.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Make sure that the basic disciplines for manufacturing prototypes are represented: mechanics, design, electronics, computer science and telecommunications.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
ii. Integration of capabilities.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
A battalion of independent professionals spread out all over the world is not the solution.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
It is key that they all share a single space, where they can test and test until arriving at the best possible solution for your invention.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
iii. Commitment to the result.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Make sure to retain a list of features for a firm price.\u00a0<\/div>
Prototyping will never be a bargain, but it\u2019s essential that all changes be included in the agreed price right from the very start.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
iv. Say NO to a \u201cmarriage.\u201d<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
You select with whom you want to work at all times. Therefore, the prototype\u2019s technical information has to be yours.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Don\u2019t let them mess with you; put it in writing.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
v. Avoid a black box.<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>
Work with professionals who are willing to periodically show the results.\u00a0<\/div>
\u00a0<\/div>

It\u2019s important that your vision doesn\u2019t get lost in the process of manufacturing the prototype.<\/p><\/div>
