What is OTA and what is it used for in technology?<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

OTA is a method for <\/span>remotely updating the control software<\/b> of an electronic circuit.<\/span><\/p>

To better understand the <\/span>usefulness of OTA in prototypes<\/b> and products, you need to understand that there are two <\/span>types of electronic products<\/b>: <\/span>Smart electronic products<\/b> and <\/span>non-smart (or \"dumb\") electronic products<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

I know! It\u2019s true that these definitions aren't entirely scientific, but I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll be useful as an introduction to the <\/span>definition of the OTA method<\/b> and its main advantages.<\/span><\/p>

Non-smart electronic products<\/b>: The term <\/span>non-smart electronic products<\/b> refers to <\/span>electronic devices<\/b> whose operation does not require programmed logic. These are products that can perform their functions using very simple circuits, yet provide features we value in our daily lives. For example, the most popular fans on the market have a <\/span>simple circuit<\/b> to manage the electrical current, an on\/off switch, and a motor that receives power to spin the blades and generate the airflow that cools us down.<\/span><\/p>

Smart electronic products<\/b>: In contrast, <\/span>smart electronic products<\/b>, in addition to having these basic elements, require programmed logic to perform their functions. These <\/span>electronic devices<\/b> need the coexistence of two major components to operate: the hardware (<\/span>electronic components<\/b> and <\/span>peripherals<\/b>) and the <\/span>firmware<\/b>, which refers to the programming code that coordinates the operation of the smart electronic product. For example: mobile phones, televisions, and computers are products that require both components to function properly.<\/span><\/p>

Many <\/span>innovative electronic products<\/b> on the market, which have proven to be <\/span>great business opportunities<\/b>, are precisely the result of transforming <\/span>non-smart electronic products<\/b> into <\/span>smart electronic products<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

For example, <\/span>conventional household refrigerators<\/b> do not require <\/span>firmware code<\/b> to control the components that enable their basic cooling functions. However, <\/span>smart refrigerator versions<\/b> are now widely available on the market. These can be controlled from a mobile phone, use <\/span>smart sensors<\/b> to adjust their operation based on door-opening cycles and internal conditions, and some are even capable of performing self-diagnostics and sending alerts to our phones.<\/span><\/p>

Of course, adding these functions does require the integration of <\/span>microcontrollers<\/b> and <\/span>firmware solutions<\/b> capable of controlling the product and defining what we know as business logic.<\/span><\/p>

Before the 2000s, <\/span>smart electronic products<\/b> already existed\u2014mobile phones, microwaves with digital displays, digital printers, televisions, and more. Therefore, the manufacturing of all these products has required the installation of <\/span>custom-developed control software (firmware)<\/b> for each model of smart electronic product on the market.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Once the <\/span>electronic products<\/b> are manufactured and assembled in the industry, it is necessary to connect a cable to the main circuit to install the <\/span>control firmware<\/b>. It acts as the <\/span>brain of the electronic product<\/b>. Today, this method of installation and <\/span>control software updating<\/b> is still used in many <\/span>electronic products<\/b> we interact with in our daily lives.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

These cases have represented extremely high costs for manufacturers, as for decades they have been forced to maintain large after-sales technical support services whose role is to: open the product, connect a cable, and install the new <\/span>firmware versions<\/b> to correct the errors.<\/span><\/p>

The development and availability of telecommunications networks have enabled the growth and democratization of the <\/span>OTA method<\/b> (<\/span>Over-The-Air)<\/b>.<\/span> The <\/span>use of OTA in electronic products<\/b> allows for <\/span>firmware updates<\/b> that control these products to be performed remotely\u2014without cables, without technical knowledge, and without the need to open the product.<\/span><\/p>

Therefore,<\/span> the implementation of OTA <\/b>has a direct impact on the costs associated with after-sales technical services for nearly all brands that launch <\/span>smart electronic products<\/b> to the market.<\/span><\/p>

Nowadays, you interact with <\/span>devices that are constantly updated via OTA<\/b>. This way, you benefit from <\/span>product improvements, new features<\/b>, and technical issue resolutions\u2014easily and without incurring any cost.<\/span><\/p>

One of the common concerns among our <\/span>inventor clients<\/b> and <\/span>innovation departments of large companies<\/b> is the risk that their products may be copied by manufacturers themselves in the future.<\/span><\/p>

Despite <\/span>patents<\/b><\/a> or other <\/span>methods for protecting a product\u2019s intellectual property<\/b><\/a>, there\u2019s one truth: if your product is good, someone will try to copy it. That\u2019s why one of your main goals during the <\/span>creation of an electronic prototype<\/b><\/a> should be to take measures that minimize the risk of your product being copied.<\/span><\/p>

The <\/span>implementation of OTA<\/b>, in addition to the advantages mentioned above, can also be considered a <\/span>method for protecting electronic products<\/b>\u2014and let me explain how we've done it at <\/span>Let\u2019s Prototype<\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Imagine we develop a <\/span>wearable device<\/b>\u2014for example, a <\/span>smartwatch designed for playing padel<\/b><\/a>. A <\/span>watch capable of identifying padel strokes<\/b>, <\/span>tracking points<\/b>, and alerting you to potential health risks while you play.<\/span><\/p>

This <\/span>special smartwatch for padel players<\/b> will require various <\/span>electronic components<\/b>, <\/span>smart sensors<\/b>, and of course, a <\/span>microcontroller<\/b> and <\/span>firmware<\/b> (<\/span>control software<\/b>) that manages all the data and synchronizes with your match.<\/span><\/p>

Of course, it will be an <\/span>electronic device<\/b> subject to improvements and likely to have multiple issues that we\u2019ll only discover once it\u2019s used by thousands of padel players. Including the ability to <\/span>update the firmware via OTA<\/b> will allow players, with just a couple of taps on the smartwatch\u2019s touchscreen, to always have the latest and most corrected version of the firmware.<\/span><\/p>

Let\u2019s now think about the <\/span>intellectual property protection of this product<\/b><\/a>. The innovation behind smart padel wristbands lies in the <\/span>mathematical models<\/b><\/a> and <\/span>artificial intelligence<\/b><\/a>. As you can imagine, these logics are defined within the device\u2019s own <\/span>control firmware<\/b>. Therefore, in this case, a patent would have limited usefulness.<\/span><\/p>

To <\/span>protect the innovation<\/b><\/a> of this electronic product, we could use two strategies\u2014although I\u2019ll tell you in advance that the first one is not highly recommended.<\/span><\/p>

Strategy 1:<\/b> Build your own factory for smart padel wristbands. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll agree with me that this is a very slow path and, above all, requires astronomical investments.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps, over the years and with a lot of money invested, you might eventually manage to manufacture wristbands with the same quality as those already produced in China\u2014but with costs that will hardly be as competitive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Strategy 2:<\/b> Establish a strategy for installing and <\/span>updating firmware via the OTA method<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

On one hand, you\u2019ll be able to use existing production lines in China. You\u2019ll reach the industrial production stage more quickly and at a lower cost compared to Strategy No. 1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Once the units are manufactured, you can provide the <\/span>Chinese manufacturers<\/b><\/a> with a very basic <\/span>control software<\/b> (<\/span>firmware<\/b>). This firmware will not include any of the innovative features you want to protect. Therefore, once the wristbands are assembled, the manufacturers will connect a cable and install a <\/span>limited version of the firmware<\/b>. This version will be enough to verify that the <\/span>electronic components<\/b> are working properly\u2014nothing more.<\/span><\/p>

Once the wristbands reach the end customers, in their <\/span>packaging<\/b> and fully sealed, the screen will display the steps for the user to <\/span>update the firmware via OTA,<\/b> which is what actually enables the product to be used for playing padel with all its features.<\/span><\/p>

  1. Manufacturers will never have access to the final firmware, which is what enables the electronic product to deliver its innovative features.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  2. Customers will never be able to access the software that controls their wristbands.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  3. Customers will always be able to use their wristband with the latest available firmware.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>
  4. The inventor saves costs on after-sales services and can continuously improve the product without generating additional costs for customers. <\/span><\/li><\/ol>

The lack of experience and strategic vision required to <\/span>create an electronic product<\/b> can doom your invention to failure.<\/span><\/p>
